In light of the recent news on the admissions bribery scandal, where parents were paying astronomical amounts of money for an educational consultant to guarantee their child’s acceptance into certain universities, we would like to provide you with some tips on how to choose a trustworthy educational consultant.

The first step is to make sure that he or she has an affiliation with an association like IECA (Independent Educational Counseling Association) or NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counseling) These associations ensure that their members hold the highest standards of education, training, ethics, and expertise within the field of educational consulting.

Next, review the educational consultant’s website or experience an initial consultation to determine how he or she addresses the following questions:

  1. Would you be able to guarantee admissions through your services? (make sure the answer is no)
  2. What type of educational background do you have that will add value to your services?
  3. Are all fees clearly stated in the contract of service?
  4. Do you attend professional conferences and training to make sure you have the most updated data to present during your consultation meetings?
  5. Do you regularly visit college campuses and meet with admissions representatives to stay up to date with the ever-changing academic environment?
  6. What do previous clients have to say about working with you?

An ethical educational consultant can’t get your child accepted, instead, he or she can focus on guiding your child about how to exemplify talents and qualifications and choose colleges and universities suitable for your child’s academic goals and future aspirations.
